A Critical Interviewing Mistake!

Candidates more often that not miss one of the best opportunities during the interview to shine, to differentiate themselves, and demonstrate their ability to do the job. What a great opportunity missed!!

In most interviews, the interviewer even sets the candidate up with the opportunity to shine and candidates blow right past it. The interviewer asks the soft ball question, “Do you have any questions for me?” A golden opportunity to shine. The questions you ask can outshine every answer you have given so far in the interview.

However, time and time again, I hear candidates do one of two things:

This is your opportunity to ask questions that demonstrate your ability to understand the job and what performance standards will be. Challenge the interviewer, ask “Why” are you doing X, probe deeply into the issues you will face once on board, how they manage, etc. Every candidate knows this question is coming in one form or the other. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions is a sign of strength, confidence and demonstrates a depth of knowledge. As a recruiter for almost 30 years, when a hiring manager calls back and says, “This person really asked me some great questions. They made me think in the interview.” I know that person is getting the job.

One component of your interviewing preparation should be questions to ask. Not just questions about the company, but specific questions about the job, ask “why”, ask about communications, ask about past issues, ask about future challenges, ask about people, ask about KPI’s, ask about systems, there are so many issues to discuss to make sure you will be successful.

The best advice I have is ask the same questions you will be asking once in the job to be successful. You might as well know them before you accept the position. Otherwise, it might be a position where you can’t succeed.

With my experience of assisting thousands of professional immigrants with their job search, the questions that cause most anxiety relate to the lack of Canadian work experience. It’s extremely important that new professionals handle this question with a solid response. Most professional immigrants arrive in Canada with a great education, years of work experience, lots of talent and a commitment to hard work. Yet lack the understanding of how to effectively communicate their value during a job interview. It’s vital that newcomers showcase that they DO HAVE the drive, skills and experience to take on a professional job similar to that of their home country.

Forget Interview strategies for this column. Here are some real interview answers to get you through the number one toughest question your will face. Practice these answers, memorize them and use them. This type of professional language will help you understand and respond effectively to the dreaded Canadian experience question:

Employer Question:

Why should we hire you, over other candidates with greater Canadian experience? To answer this question you will need a plan or a rehearsed script. Think about famous actors when they perform in a play or a movie. They do so only after massive preparation. Every word, every pause, every facial gesture has been practiced. In fact, professionals in every field recognize when called to perform at a competitive level they must be ready. They practice until their responses to an important situation becomes second nature.

Treat your response to questions or concerns related to your lack of Canadian experience with the same degree of practice and performance. Rather than taking a defensive position with your answer, go on the offense. Turn the question into an opportunity that mirrors commonly held business concepts.

Job Listings

Here’s a script to rehearse.

Answer:

“We’re in a dynamic global economy, I understand you are (or want to be) a global company. A company that thinks and acts beyond Canada’s borders. My work experience has many common traits that you are looking for.” (Give a clear example at this point that matches their requirements.) Write down your own experience example and rehearse it before the interview. Practice over and over again, memorize and make sure you provide examples of experiences that match the criteria for their job description.

Here’s more dialogue for you to memorize.

“I also hope to assist with your companies initiatives locally and globally. Many Canadian businesses are realizing that more than half of their products and services are being bought by new immigrants. I hope with my multi-language skills and cultural understanding that I can help service and grow your customer base in new markets that are growing each year with the increase in Canadian immigration.

These responses will be extremely attractive to companies that are targeting their products into immigrant market segments. Your competition will not be able to compete with your language and cultural insights that match social demographic changes to Canada’s population. If you’re interviewing with a progressive company, there may already be plans underway to move their products and services global or at least local plans to reach growing immigrant communities in Canada.

I know most of your realize that you must commit to improving your English skills and practice every day. But go beyond practice and pretend you are an actor in a movie learning a foreign accent. You’re not trying to be fake when job interviewing, your simply trying to present full value of your potential.

You shouldn’t be relegated to low level entry jobs in Canada. If you’re a professional take responsibility for preparing and presenting yourself until you can answer well enough to present your skills and experience. Practice interview answers until you can quote them perfectly. Memorize, practice and face questions about your lack of Canadian experience with confidence. Become dedicated to your interview performance, like actors in-front of paying audiences. Because when your interviewing for a job, you are performing in-front of a paying audience, your future employer.

Good Interview Questions to Ask at Interview

 

Most interviewees focus only on what job interview questions they will be asked and what answers they should give.

Few give enough attention to what questions they should ask of their interviewers!

But you must have at least one good interview question to ask. Why?

Because if you have none, your interviewers may have one of the following negative thoughts:

They will think that you think you know everything about the job/company already when they know you don’t (how could you unless you’re doing the job already?).

They will think you’re not serious about choosing the right job since you will accept the position without asking any questions of it.

So always have at least one good interview question to ask your interviewer/s.

Here are some ideas if you’re stuck.

Questions about the Company

What can you tell me about the Company’s plans for the next 5 years?

What is the Company’s main focus this year?

What’s the best thing about working for the Company?

What does the Company pride itself on?

How would you describe the Company ethos?

Questions about the role

Apart from what we discussed, what other activities will I undertake in this role?

What plans do you have for this role, moving forward?

How many others do the same role as this?

Has the role changed since it first began?

Questions about training

Can you tell me how I’ll be trained? Will it be on-the-job for example?

How long do you expect it to be before I’m fully competent in the role?

Who will train me? Will it be a colleague doing the job already?

Questions about progression/development

What progression opportunities will there be for me if I’m successful in this role?

Does the Company promote development for its staff?

Have you benefited from progression in this Company?

Questions about performance measurement

How will my performance be measured in this role?

What rewards are there for those who out-perform their peers?

How often will I be appraised?

You may have noticed that some of these good interview questions are personal questions to the interviewer. Don’t be afraid to ask these. It shows that you see your interviewer/s as employees too and are interested in their experiences and opinions. This creates a friendly, warm environment which can only work in your favour.

Note: Don’t ask NO questions but don’t ask TOO many questions either. Your interviewers’ time is previous so only ask those questions which will affect your decision to accept the job if it were offered to you. Stick to a maximum of 5 questions, less if time appears short.
